I remember I used to run often 4-5 miles at least 4 times a week when I was 11yo.
At this time I would often do XC races. At 11 yo, when I started track, the length of the XC races would be around a mile to 2k.
Usually the winners would go around 5:30min-5:50min/mile pace. And I never could break 6:40/mile pace.
So I never managed to go at least top 15.
I would usually do all my training runs around 8-8:30min/mile pace.
I made the most progress when I started including intervals tho.

When I asked the guys running sub 6min/mile pace later on, most of them told me they trained the most intervals.
