The trials run was a brilliant move by Walmsley, as is this. He stirs it up some, the games do or do not happen, Rupp finishes wherever.

Then Walmsley wins Comrades, and the story reads "Sure Rupp was 6th, but Walmsley first at an even longer race." Oh, and Rupp's former coach won there, too, will Rupp rise to the challenge?

You'd have to be an assshole to not route for Rupp. He's the greatest American distance runner in generations, and the very best of the era that got us out of the dark ages. How do you not route for the guy you were so desperate we'd eventually have, circa 2003?

Let's wait and see if Walmsely wins Comrades. It hasn't happened yet just like it hasn't happen that Walmsley got a spot for the Olympic's. He was only 22nd. Not bad but all the things the Walmsley fanboys envisioned, didn't happen.

Walmsley, his writers and this fanboys are great to hype him up. At the end it's about selling Hoka shoes and nothing else matters. Hoka will write him big checks as long as everybody buys these shoes.

How competitive is Comrades?

I imagine Wamsley can run the ultra equivalent of a 2:09 or better there. Maybe even 2:07 equivalent since he has skill on technical downhills.

I never hear about it, except the year Salazar won, which does not give any information about how competitive the other runners were besides slower than him.

I would say me and most other people aren’t rooting for Galen.

There’s no doubt that he’s an extremely talented, extremely hardworking athlete. One of the most amazing things about him, especially with recent stuff, is that he shows up on race day and he gets the job done and executes his best race plan. He’s a great competitor. Not necessarily rooting for him.

Will Rupp rise to this?

It's not blatant, but he's still bad-mouthing Rupp. Being beat by almost 6 minutes must have hurt his feelings.

Guess I'm an assshole, then. I'm not route-ing for Rupp, or rooting for that matter. I give him a lot of credit for almost always delivering. However, a number of factors contribute to why a person might choose not to root for Rupp - how he had everything provided for him from a young age; the way he came across as a privileged aristocrat with his own agenda while at U of O; and most of all, the close association with Salazar.

He may be a pleasant guy; I don't know. But you can't expect everybody to root for him. Some people will root for the top American no matter what, but there are many others like me who don't work that way.

It's highly likely that Rupp doesn't know who Jim Walmsley is, so I doubt that this passive-aggressive nonsense will even register.

The man who coached him since a teenager took a banned substance (testosterone) when he was an athlete, had an athlete test positive for testosterone, had Rupp on "testosterone medication" as a teenager, and tested how much exogenous testosterone would trigger a positive test by using his son as a guinea pig.

Isn’t Jim the exact kind of guy who Sage is referring to when he constantly brings up the lack of drug testing and likely PED use in ultramarathons? Seems like there has been a lot of questions asked about his huge mileage and ability to recover which is suggestive of some outside assistance. Not sure Jim wants to throw stones until he starts getting tested at least as much as Galen does.

Even if he has, he's not going to care what Walmsley thinks about him. It would be like Mike Trout getting worked up about something a double A player said about him. The timing of it makes it 100% sour grapes.

No one cares about Walmsley. He runs in an event no one cares about.

He finished over a mile behind Rupp He doesn't get to fire shots. When he can run within 2 minutes, or be with Rupp in sight of the finish line he can talk.
