Did anyone else just see the 1500 from the decathlon? All these guys cross the line 4:30+ and collapse from exhaustion. Our US winner ran a 5:03.
Of course they focus on other aspects of training, but that was hilarious.

I guess you'd be exhasted too after doing 9 other events first.
The 15 is included in the decathlon because they needed an event to test "endurance". Basically what we learn is that these guys have none. How can someone run 47-48 s for a 400 but be unable to run under 4:30 for 15?!?
I say they should have a real test: make them run the Marathon! That would make the last event more than perfunctory, which it often is now. Much more than perfunctory....
I'm sure that if you collectively polled all sub 49s quarter milers, you'll find that the majority have trouble breaking 4:30.
Especially decathletes -- they have to train for 9 other events and the 1500 isn't weighted too heavily.
sebrle's run 4:22. that's pretty damn good for a guy who can vault 17 feet and throw jav 70m+.
I didn't see it, but 5:03 from Bryan Clay seems subpar for him. I know that he easily had the meet won, but with a little effort he could have broken 9,000 points and had the US record. Was he straining, or just cruising?
I too have never understood how someone can run 48 for 400M, and have trouble running 75's for 3 3/4 laps.
As endurance athletes, we can't understand how the other 9 events would make someone exhausted, because if we were to do the other 9 events (and of course perform very poorly) it would have little effect on how fast we could run a 1500M.
he looked exhausted
Possibly your lack of understanding of 48 second 400 speed and 75 second 1500 speed is because you do not understand the energy systems properly.
yeah, he looked tired. I wasn't trying to diminish their accomplishments (I would suck at the other 9 events!), it was just funny for someone who doesn't normally watch the decathlon.
...was Clay dead, or did he just take 3 & 3/4 victory laps? Must be something to line up for a 1500 at the end of two straight days of competition.
I'll admit, I'm almost always underwhelmed by some of the runners in the decathlon 1500. These guys can absolutely destroy me in every event, but then comes the last one and they run times I could easily have run in 8th grade (5:03), possibly even after two days of competing in nine other activities.
Build your body up to have the physique of a NFL tight end and try to run the 1500m. We talk on here a lot about how weight and extra muscle hinder you in distance events. They're living proof.
They never look like they're going fast, but I'm actually impressed at the times guys that big can turn in
