I rarely run to HR other than first halfish of marathon, but I do have a look after the majority of my races,
I have never done a max test, but I have seen my HR up around 186 on the odd occassion, so I generally take that as max value.
The last marathon I ran (in 2:43), I was at around 160 for most of it and then it rose as expected later in the race, giving me an avg of around 163, this sits well with the suspected 186 max.
My Half HR avg is slightly higher at around 167. (1:17)
Last year I ran a 10k with avg HR at 170. (35mins)
But here's the thing, when I run a 5k the avg at best is around 171. I am pushing flat out for the race, not vommit inducing pace, but a pace where I am uncomfortable.
Is this normal? I would have expected the 5k HR to be higher, at a push it gets up to 75 near the end of a race on the odd occassion but I certainly don't feel that I could sustain that level of effort.
Now I am a high mileage/quality avoiding type of guy, would this be the reason. or is this what it is?
FWIW I am 45.
