I have some ignorant questions that I hope some of you experts can answer. I have my questions condensed into two themes:
1) When does your body start switching from using slow twitch fibers to fast twitch? How can you tell when this is occuring? Is it gradual? Is it only speed/pace related or is it also fatigue related?
I read in a cross country skiing book that you can tell you are switching over to using more fast twitch muscles when you start breathing hard. Is that true?
It also seems from what I have read about running, that when you are jogging within your breath, you are mostly using slow twitch muscles and building mitochondria/capillaries in them. The problem is that most out of shape persons can barely run a 7 minute mile without breathing hard. That hardly seems "fast". On the surface it wouldn't seem necessary to bring in fast twitch fibers for this pace. So, what is going on? Are the fast twitch muscles being recruited early because the slow twitch one's "suck" so bad and tire out? Or are they still not being recruited at all, since you are still going relatively slow. A well trained (or talented) person can almost jog at that pace without breathing hard at all.
2) Do you still use some slow twitch muscles even when you are running fairly fast?
I would hope so, otherwise what is the point of doing any slow training if you want to run a fast 800 meters?
Thanks in advance for serious responses.
