Correction to above post: Koko won last year's Wannamaker Mile in 4:19.98 which is the fastest mile pr in the field.

Given the recent "legalization" of the VaporFly shoe design, entire field (don't know who rabbit is) could be under 4:30. Rivers & Jones are in striking distance of taking down Jenny Simpson's 4:25.91 indoor collegiate record.

Debues-Stafford has the fastest outdoors PBs but she ran both in the two fastest (non-chinese) races over these distances, the Monaco WR mile and the Doha 1500m final. (I wonder how many of the marks from these two races will not be bettered or hardly reached again)

In the DL GD-S was soundly beaten by Koko in Birmingham and Zurich (but outkicked her in London ). Last year Koko was not challenged, passed the pacemaker before the latter dropped out and ran the second half alone without looking all that exhausted (she kept jogging for an honors lap after the tape). But I am not sure she is in this kind of shape now and Reekie must be considered a favorite after that 800m record. Koko does not have this kind of speed and she is tactically mediocre, so unless the pacing is good and Koko can keep it fast, it will be very hard for her to win and the odds are in favor of Reekie and GDS.

Yes, JWH, thx for correction. D-S did run that 4:17 last year in Monaco.

I suppose Hiltz, with her recent 4:29 as the top seasonal time amongst US entrants, would be the slight US favorite.

Colleen Quigley was the top US finisher last year in 2nd at 4:22 then went on to beat Houlihan and win US indoors. Not sure if anyone other that the aforementioned top-3 can get that low but, again, new shoe technology could play a role.

If Houlihan or even BTC teammate Karissa Schweizer were entered, they would have a great opportunity to get under 4:20 for a new AR and compete for the win.

As it is, if Rivers & Jones are having great days, they might have a better chance of breaking Simpson's 4:25 indoor collegiate record.

If Houlihan ran, she would be another favorite for the win, obviously. The field is far more competitive than last year where Koko's dominant win was not quite expected but exactly according to 1500 PB. Of the three mentioned Americans, Hiltz seems the best competitor (tactics etc.), Osika could be the strongest miler overall, but they are all three very close as the 1500 PBs show. (I think it is usually better to go by 1500m outdoors PB because the mile is raced so infrequently.)

I think Sinclaire Johnson will be the top American.

Yes, Wanamaker (only one n), thx again for another correction.

Pretty bold prediction re: Sinclair, as she's still taking classes at OK State to get her degree so nothing at altitude so far and this is her opener.

However, other than Reekie & Koko I believe she has the fastest 800m in the field (2:00.43). She kicked down Hull for the NCAA win and almost get herself to Doha. So yes, she certainly has a chance to be the top American.

Interesting. The brojos mention Hiltz, Purrier, Jones & Johnson, as threats to finish in the top three, but not Osika.

Purrier is very fit and a very consistent racer. I could easily see her in any of the top 3 spots.

She's not alone in having run her PBs in fast races. That's true for Purrier and Hiltz as well.

Osika, on the other hand, won her fastest race (4:01.80). By NINE seconds.

As you say, she may yet prove to be the best of the bunch. If we are lucky, we'll know more after this weekend.

Remember, one could argue that the five best American women milers right now are Houlihan, Simpson, Schweizer, Quigley, and McGee. They are not entered.

If anyone of the American women at Wanamaker can break up the top-3 of Koko, GD-S and Reekie, that would be just more proof how impossibly deep American women's miling has become in just the past couple years.

Wow! I wish I could be so certain. When I look at the youngsters behind H & S, they all look pretty similar to me. They've all shown promise, but so far, none of them have delivered on that promise. Since I have no idea who will be the next Houlihan, and who the next Kate Grace, I just lump them all together. I figure the Good Lord (or the USATF, or the IAAF) will sort them out eventually.

I must be missing something.
