Saw some distance runners at Publix. I asked them how the season was going so far and they said they are running faster times now. So I asked what was the difference and they replied "the training". They said that they were running between 40-45 miles a week with Zola. Now they have upped their weekly mileage and their times have dropped dramatically. Now, having division 1 distance athletes running 45 miles a week is a shame to the distance coach and a disservice to the athletes. It makes sense why we haven't seen the distance program grow under Zola. 45 miles a week is a high school workout. If you ask teams like BYU, Northern Arizona, Colorado, and Oregon on average how many miles a week their athletes run they would probably say anywhere from 75-90. I look forward to seeing the growth of the distance athletes this season with their new training regime, especially the Wildschutte brothers.
