Paula Radcliffe calls out Mara Yamauchi

Must say, I once held Radcliffe in high esteem (years ago). Now it seems like every year, she reveals more and more of her true self, and it ain't all that pleasant.

I think especially lame was the defense of liking the "Mara looks like Susan Boyle" tweet. She acts all like, what's wrong with saying someone looks like Susan Boyle?, as if it's not obvious. It would be like saying someone looked like The Elephant Man, and then saying, well, it's not like that means they're ugly.

Butchart also exposes himself as a d-bag.

Well, that's weird. Sounds as though there's a lot of nastiness all around. What happened to that British sense of civility? (I noticed that Tom Bosworth, the race "walker," also expressed his appreciation for Butchart's tweet.)

Maybe I'm missing the context of these remarks -- figuring out who said what to whom on twitter has always been something of a mystery to me -- but Paula's suggestion that there was no denigration of Mara does seem rather disingenuous, particularly in light of her next several words:

Made me smile. How is it an insult to remark on similarities to Susan Boyle? What’s wrong with looking like her? And btw Mara was also denigrating hard working athletes’ performances when they were simply racing and respecting rules of the sport.

Radcliffe has nothing to offer this world now that her (superhuman) legs stopped running fast enough, that's why she's nothing more than a shrill shill. Yamauchi has always been classy and has a full life outside of running. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think it has been blatantly obvious for quite some time what a d-bag Butchart is. He's just insufferable. No coincidence that he's in Kenya in a training camp with Mo Farah. Birds of a feather...

Looks like the Brits have some serious infighting issues. I missed the part where Butchart said she looks like Susan Boyle, but Twitter is not easy for me to follow like that.

I looked at Google Images of Susan Boyle, and she has a wide spectrum of looks, some more flattering than others. When she lost weight, and got made up for some album covers, she looks really nice. So I guess insult depends on which Susan Boyle that Mara was supposed to look like.

Having said that, I did not find much of a resemblance.

Don't worry, pretty much every runner I know can't stand Butchart or Sharp. I say that as a Brit-based Brit with hundreds of Brit running mates running for Brit clubs.

Yes the nasty side of British culture is exposed. Radcliffe's failure to win the OG is now stewing in bitterness and the marination is irreversible, but her personality was always like this...just better masked, and with a higher proportion of normalfunction days in the past. Now we see the true personality, without being clouded by the laurels and worship accorded to the active elite athlete.

So I'm trying to figure out the triggers, in this thread, that help explain some of the subsequent comments among a few posters.

From what I could decipher on Twitter:

- Butchart post on Twitter something which may or may not have said Mara Yamauchi looks like Susan Boyle. (He later posted "Did I?" to such a conclusion).

- Paula liked it, because it made her smile. Paula didn't see how liking the Tweet was an insult.

- Stuart Bond compared liking a tweet, which may or may not have been meant as an insult, which may or may not have compared Yamauchi's looks to Susan Boyle, to bullying.

- Paula defended young athletes from accusations of cheating by Matt Yates, for wearing shoes which were "legal".

I don't see how we get from there, to accusations of her defending Mo Farah (from whom and for what?), that she lost all rights when she first took EPO (I thought the "learned" accusers say she transfused blood), she stood up for Sleazy Sal (like here, she stood up for athletes, NOP athletes not found doping after 7 years of investigation leaving no stone unturned), that she and her husband are two-faced, and that she suffers from WR depression, and that failure to win Olympic Gold is stewing in bitterness and marinating, she's a sourpuss and a hypocrit.

It looks like there is a fair share of stewing bitterness marinating and WR depression all around.

Where do fans of the sport stand on Matt Yates pointing the finger and blaming young athletes?
