Why do so many who post on this website make derogatory comments about ultra runners in general and top ultra runners like Jim Walmsley in particular? If you have never completed or attempted to complete an ultra what business do you have making fun of those of us who do? I've found the ultra running community to be incredibly open and collaborative and the races can be a real adventure and challenge. As an older runner there is 0% chance that I'm ever going to get anywhere near my PR's from 35 ago for anything up to the marathon but every new ultra distance I complete is a PR. I realize that completing a race at an average pace of 9 or 10 minutes/mile might not seem like much of an accomplishment but running at this pace for 8 - 24 hours while tackling 5,000 - 25,000 feet of vertical climbing on a rocky trail is, I will assure you, not a piece of cake. Those of you posting snarky comments about ultra runners should get off your butts and complete a 50K or longer with 5,000 feet of vertical or more and then you would have a legitimate basis for making all the snarky comments you want. Or, if that's not possible you should volunteer at an ultra aid station to get a feel for what ultra running is all about. The top ultra athletes are not washouts from road running and they have unique skills that are fascinating to watch. I was going up Pikes Peak this summer while Kilian Jornet was coming down - have you ever seen someone bomb down a mountain trail at close to a 5 minute/mile pace with big rocks and roots all over the trail?
