I am soon getting an internship which is 1 hour of train riding away but is also exactly one hour of biking. So I figured it might be fun to bike there and bike back, which would be 2 hours a day and 10 hours a week on top of 50-60 mpw. Would this be a good thing for my fitness or should I just drive the train?> Or just ride the bike on my harder workout days and drive the train on easy days?
Thanks
There is not much cross-over between cycling and running performance. However, at your mpw you need 4-5 hours of more aerobic training to maximize VO2MAX and cardiovascular system. Going from 0 to 10 hours a week cycling is suicide. You will bonk on rides (running out of carbs and pedaling home at 15 mph on pure fat) and your butt might break apart. Like anything, you need to gradually introduce it and then build up. Start with 1 ride a week, then 2, then 3 and keep it at 3.
One big benefit of the cycling is if you have weight to cut, it can certainly help you since you burn a significant amount of extra calories during the two rides each day.
