I'm pretty small (5'7", 112) for 18 years old. I've also had a lot of injuries and so have never done anything impressive in terms of race performances. I am working now on aerobic improvement so I can hold basic speed for longer, but my concern is that my basic speed as it stands is not good enough.
In short, if I hypothetically develop my endurance very well, I still won't be fast because I'll only be able to hold a high percentage of a bad max speed.
So I want to improve my basic, natural speed. I've really never done any focused plyometrics or sprint workouts, only strides. I used to do, before this latest injury, sets of 150m strides pretty often. I could usually sprint the last one, by myself on a track in racing flats, in 21-low. I figure I went through some 100m section in 13-high.
My question is to anyone who has been able to make huge leaps in improving natural speed, how did you do it, and also, were you able to continue with normal distance training?
I am still a distance runner so I really don't have 2 hours a day to spare lifting weights or anything.
If it helps I seem to have had fairly good leg turnover/stride rate. I did a drill recently trying to reach as fast a cadence as possible and my best result was taking 10 strides in 4.14 seconds, coming out to 289 per minute. I've done 265-280 several times in the past, but my stride does not seem long enough.
I'd really appreciate any help anyone could offer. I'm always reading about everyone on the board having 24 200 speed and bad endurance. I have bad speed and bad endurance, so I'd like to know how to correct both.
Thanks.
