Hello. I am seeking advice on how to improve my 13 year old daughter in the 3k for her middle school track season. Her first meet is 14 weeks away.
I personally run just to stay in reasonable shape and she has kind of taken on my ability to run fairly slow for fairly long without any trouble. We've been doing this together for a few years now but she obviously wants to race faster.
We currently run about 12-13 miles a week (4 runs), almost all at a fairly comfortable pace (about 8.5 to 9 mins per mile). We also do core exercises together with a 6 pound medicine ball 3-4 times a week.
Her best 3k time during XC season was 13 minutes. We would like to get that down to about 12 minutes on a track. She can run the 400 in about 1:25.
I have read that it is better to work on base conditioning for now and to wait to do intervals/speed work until fairly close in time to the actual races. Yet at the the same time I think she needs to start learning to turn her feet over faster. She seems to spend a lot of time in the air, especially when she gets tried. .
I would appreciate any ideas you may have. Thank you!
