Targeted assassinations are illegal. I guess lawyers for U.S. Department of Defense must say if a bomb or missile strike it is not officially a targeted assassination. Maybe lawyers only think a rifleman or infantryman with a knife are assassins. Same for C.I.A. contract assassins. 20 years ago, I thought we’d go in. Get bad guy out & democracy would flourish. It would be an American satellite in Middle East and we could lower defense budget & oil spikes.

Trump was elected president because it was hoped he could clamp down on immigration and stop the mass exodus of American jobs overseas. There was also hope that he could scale back the never-ending conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere. He certainly wasn't elected to start a war with Iran, anymore than Obama was elected to bomb Libya and overthrow Ghaddafi (and attempt to overthrow Assad).
A plebiscite for war with Iran would be soundly defeated by both Democrat and Republican voters. Yet the lobbyists, think tanks, State Department and Pentagon hacks, have been pushing for war with Iran for more than a decade and now see their chance. I really hope Trump has the stones and brains to say no, but I have my doubts.

I do not know your age. Either you remember Hezbollah kidnappings of 1980s or you have had an opportunity to read about them. Anyone praising what happened has no idea. Kidnapping and retaliation killings may occur anywhere.
Iran is trying to take over Iraq and in turn Saudi Arabia. They see the politically divisive impeachment of Trump as a sign of weakness in America and are trying to capitalize on it. Trump simply reiterated that the US is not weak and will not allow Iran to destabilize the region.
