I lived and ran in Laramie for 6y (1995-2000), occasionally running with the UW team (Joe Hall and Ryan Bolton were NCAA XC qualifiers then, and Bolton later made the USA Olympic Triathlon team). While Laramie is a great place for summer and fall training, with miles and miles of trails in every direction, the winters can be brutal. Blinding snow storms and persistent winds are really tough to train through. The air temperature is actually reasonable (35-45 daily), and the almost daily sunshine make it quite nice occasionally, but not enough to make up for the rough winter days that would impede any high level runner. Also, there is only a small indoor track available (the university has since replaced their dirt track, which was nice, but not ideal for high level training). The running community back then was small, pretty much limited to the UWYO team and a very few other local runners. Ft. Collins is close enough (~60 minutes) for lower altitude speed work, and usually much better weather, especially in winter, but sometimes you can't get out of Laramie because of the snow. Overall, I actually loved running in Laramie, and still stop there on vacations for the mountain running, but the town has a stunted economy outside the university, and is conservative in many ways (I was also there during the Matthew Shepard killing, and in another sad turn of events, I knew most of the guys who died in the tragic van accident immediately post-911).
