I'm a freshman collegiate runner at the NAIA level and I wanted to gather some information regarding a sub 2:50 marathon (6:28 pace), which is the national qualifying standard for NAIA Outdoor Nationals in May. I recently ran a half marathon at a local race and ran 1:23:30 (6:22 pace). It was a race where my average HR was 155 and it felt very smooth to me. I ran with a group of guys clicking off 6:30 pace for the first 9 miles, then I gapped them the last 4 miles and went sub 6:00 for all of those. I felt like I had a lot left in the tank, and it felt more like a solid long run, not a real race effort. I've only been training for three weeks after taking a week off after XC season, and I'm only running 40 miles per week at the moment. If I trained properly, do you think it's possible to break 2:50 in 3-4 months when I give it a shot? If so, what should I be doing to prepare for it? I'm planning on running a marathon a couple weeks after my last indoor meet. My PR's are 4:36 mile, 10:17 2 mile, 16:40 5k.
Thanks for the help!
