What are the best parks, weighted towards running quality, located in (and not just on the outskirts of) cities with a population of 500,000 +?
Central park is the obvious example, although I only really like the north woods area. The rest feels way too touristy and empty for my tastes, and I really prefer unpaved trails.
Mount royal in Montreal is probably my favorite park of this type. The entire place feels like the nicer parts of central park, although maybe it's too hilly for some and it's still more designed for picnickers than I would like, but that's the price of convenience.
Is Van Cortlandt urban enough to count? I've only been there a couple times, but it does seem nicer than Central park.
Philly has some great parks on its outskirts, but nothing in the city itself. The other major east coast cities also seem pretty lacking.
The only good park of this type I've seen in Europe is Tiergarten in Berlin. I'd rank it a step below the others I mentioned though.
Any other great ones?
