I ran a marathon this weekend and the weather didn't cooperate. Humid in the first half and hot and sunny during the second half.
Going into the race my plan was to go for sub 3, which my training indicated was well within reach. (60-80 mile weeks, lots of race pace and faster intervals each week, etc) However, seeing the weather and knowing the race is somewhat hilly, I decided to just aim for BQ time (3:10). Plan was to go out easy (7:10 pace) and at the half drop to race pace (6:45).
We followed the plan but when the sun came out at the half we decided to just continue at 7-7:05 pace. That plan lasted until mile 18 when I started to meltdown. Averaged about 8:00 pace for the remainder and finished with a 3:17.
Race went terrible and I already signed up for another one exactly 2 months later. Do you think I can be recovered and have my fitness back in time to run that race at 100% effort between 3-3:10?
