Starting running at the end of 2018, never been a runner. 32 years old, 5'11" - 160#. Want to run a BQ (sub 3) at the end of 2020. Inspired by Phil's 2:19 thread. Most of my training has been running slowly on hilly trails, with a few road workouts here and there.
Progress so far:
2018
Sept - Finished couch to 5k, started running 5-10 mpw
Nov Half - 2:05
2019
Jan 5k - 27:36
Feb-Apr - didn't run
May - Running about 10-15 mpw
Jul 5k - 23:48
Sept - Instant increase to 30 mpw
Oct 5k - 21:37, Mile TT - 6:16
Nov 5k - 20:58
Nov Half - 1:44 (lack of long runs contributed to this relatively slow time, on pace for a 1:40 until mile 10 when I crashed to a 1:44)
Dec - Off, cross training for ~6 weeks to let my patellar tendinitis heal, gets bad on the trails, doing PT
I've made some good beginner gains this year, but I know progress will slow and it's going to be a lot harder. If I can safely build up to ~40 mpw by June, do I have a shot at a sub 3 in October? Or should I figure another year?
