Media and all of us interested in running, for a "thesis" of reasons, make The Mile Run the most significant of all running, and arguably, all track and field events; (sorry Macker). The one event that could rival the Mile in importance, but has been lost in the "tartan dust"...is the 100 Yard Dash. If you're a sprinter and want to gain some notoriety, and maybe a little money too, break the world record for the 100 Yard Dash! Know what it is?
Times, for some unknown, undiscussed reason, are very important to us...even mere 100ths of a second! I mean how infinitely more important is 3:59.99 than 4:00.00! Yes, as mentioned today on another post, the sub 4 minute mile is losing some of it's luster; (yet it is still and always will be an apex of running achievement). How outstanding, then,it is for someone to run the 100 Yard Dash in 8.9 seconds? Would it gain a moment on TV as a spectacular moment in athletic history? I'll state one fact for sure...it could be done a lot quicker then a sub 9 second 100 meter dash. And what more is a 100 meter dash then 110+yards anyhow!
