Live Streaming Cross Country Events

I'm glad you raised that topic, though not an expert in videography of sports events I am an avid spectator and am sometimes frustrated especially with the coverage of cross country meets. Watching the Olympics you see how they cover using vehicles and cameras for the marathon, granted it is a much smoother surface with far fewer turns.

Options for filming would be either small vehicles with a driver and a videographer (using good image stabilization, maybe GoPro8?) or possibly using drones. What's of interest of course to the viewer is the lead pack and the groups behind that have point scoring relevance. A camera at the finish line is also a must I think.

Sound could be muted from the capturing devices and overlaid with that of the MC. Here is a street 5k filmed and commentated by one person, I thought it was an excellent job for an amateur:

Another real innovation would be to have (with permission) a few runners with video cameras (they are so light now) strapped for a first person perspective, it's pretty amazing to watch people who have done this in races.

I ran DIV III a long time ago, great fun.

This sounds like a great idea.

I think you could go a long way if you just had an all-terrain vehicle driving in front of or next to the runners.

Thanks for sharing the Bockfest 5K video, I enjoyed watching it. I think it's just a guy on a bike with some stabilizing gear, the result is great. Excellent video quality, good commentary, you really had the feeling being part of the race. Not sure if he was live streaming it though.

hahahaha...a couple hundred what? A couple hundred $100 bills would get you just about where you want to be if you DIY. If you hire it out, it will cost a couple thousand, and if you cut out the livestream aspect you can basically get it done for free.

Reliable, quality live broadcasts are expensive.

Why would anybody put a couple of cameras and camera men out there just for a couple of hundred bucks ( I assume).

But maybe you meant a couple hundred THOUSAND.

One option would be to reach out to your local community access tv station. They probably don't have experience w/meets but do high school games. Think of this as something to build on as it's a great idea worth developing into the product you want.

Drone coverage would be cool and maybe a good starting point. But in my state you have to get permission from the governing body.

One way to reduce cost would be to offer a college internship.

Did you see the video of the 5K above, that was high quality and I don't think it costed a lot?

Not sure if he live streamed it or just uploaded afterwards though.

He doesn't need camera men, a volunteer on a bike or quad will suffice. Phones have very decent cameras these days.

You can have high quality or low cost. Pick one. If the requirement is live stream and low cost, that pretty much means using a phone.
