I was onboard the Skechers Hyperburst hype train (hyper train?) after the Razor 3. That shoe is still pretty great. Then the Gorun 7 came. The Gorun 7 mostly had upper issues, but the midsole also didn't seem the do much that the Razor 3 didn't already do better and the pods seemed somewhat gimmicky. The ride of the shoe was still good though. Then the Maxroad 4 came. The pod design seemed even more gimmicky now that there were deeper pods. My runs tend to end up being slower for the same effort in these than most other daily trainers. The pods definitely seem to soften the midsole here and add flexibility, but the shoe doesn't seem to be returning energy quite like people claim. The softness of the pod design here seems to sap out the energy. And then the Gorun Ride 8 came out. This shoe's ride is really uninspired. Yes, the upper is pretty good, but the ride is stiff, firm, and doesn't seem to have much pop or bounce. It feels like any other low-weight firmish EVA like in the Hoka Rincon or something. Yes, it feels fairly well cushioned and light, but not when you consider how much stack height is there. And it really doesn't seem to have much energy return. The transition is pretty bad too. The Maxroad at least transitions nicer with more flexibility and more of a rocker.
So this is what I think: Hyperburst is not as great as people are claiming.
First: yes, it is light. However, the amount of it that you have to use to match other materials seems to cancel some of this out. It's great if the material is light, but not if you have to use twice as much of it to get the same level of protection. The Floatride in the Floatride Run Fast seems just as protective as that in the Razor 3 for example, but for less stack. The Ride 8 and Maxroad 4 seem to be less cushioned than you would expect for how much stack there is.
Second: is the energy return really there? My legs seem to be working harder in the Maxroad 4 and Gorun Ride 8 than my other daily trainers. The Epic React, Floatride Energy, and Floatride Run 2.0 seem to move along faster with less effort. The Triumph 17 is 2 whole ounces heavier than the Maxroad 4, but my paces are faster in the shoe for less effort and while feeling more protected and probably more soft.
I will maintain that the fast Hyperburst shoes are still pretty good. The Razor 3, Speed 6, and Speed Elite are good options. But the cushioned shoes seemed to have highlighted the weaknesses of Hyperburst. And they make me question if the energy return is really there. The Maxroad 4 feels like it has some bounce, but maybe that is overshadowed by the amount of softness in the pods. The Ride 8 really doesn't feel like it has much pop, but the hyperburst does feel firmer and different in this shoe as well.
Thoughts?

The Floatride and Pwrrun+ in the Triumph 17 are doing it for me though.
