I was spectating at the Midwest regionals hosted by OSU today. OSU won the right to host Div 1 nationals in 2020, has sunk a bunch of money into the course and Dave Smith has been boasting that it’s the best course in the country. I think Dave has sold us a bill of goods.
To their credit, OSU has created a great running surface that’s perfectly manicured, however spectatating nationals will be nearly impossible next year. The course loops through a wooded area with a few narrow places to cut through. With the size of the crowd next year for nationals it’ll be impossible to see the runners more than a few times without getting trapped in the crowd.
The course is also brutally tough with constant serious hills. This is fine for nationals but was a terrible idea for regionals. The Midwest men’s qualifiers just ran a brutally hilly 10k and will need to bounce back in 8 days. In contrast the NE region ran on the freakin roads...how is that fair?
Last comment, the course is so tough and unique I thought OSU would have a major home course advantage but both teams shix the bed today. Not sure why both programs aren’t better given funding and reputation.
