I ran a marathon on 10/20, with a 1260-mile buildup over 7 months, peaking at 61 mpw in September. Did ok for a beginner, not great (3:24). Weirdly, my lungs felt fine and not out of breath but my legs were toast.
I had done 2 5ks this summer as speedwork but not actual training (21:5x each time and top 5 at each marathon. Winners were sub-20 in both cases). Not great at all but on par with a 3:24-bracket marathon.
I took 18 days off, but walked/jogged daily for 45 mins. or so, so as to let my legs recover but not lose too much speed.
Did a time trial on Friday (it was getting dark) on a windy track in Westerville (Central HS, if you are familiar with the area). The track's back 200m always has wind issues. Ran 22:29 (7:01, 7:13, 7:24, 0:51).
Did it today and was a little bit faster in 22:16 (7:11, 7:09, 7:06, 0:50), due to smarter pacing.
But still finished feeling somwhat discouraged.
My long-term goal is to run sub-19 and not be totally crappy at road races. I am 36 and ran 18:33 but years ago. I'm not looking to run 16 or anything. I am hoping to run 35-40 mpw for the 5k (less than the 'thon) but do I need to run 55-60 like I did to get optimal results, or even higher?
