Hi LRC,
So, long story short, I graduated from an undergrad last year, and am looking at several possible paths now. I am UK-based. Considered a LONG post laying out my options, but thought I'd just ask the following questions:
1: Will a stats PhD holder have a greater array of professional opportunities in industry than a stats Masters degree holder?
I do not wish to enter academia as a career path, I would prefer to enter industry.
2: Would a PhD in a strongly numeric, applied area other than statistics (e.g: Game Theory, Operational Research, Cryptography), open as many doors as a stats PhD?
3: Would getting a job with just my undergrad credentials (first-class Maths and Stats BSc, prizewinner in Number Theory) be extremely likely to hamstring me in terms of career advancement down the road, without any postgraduate qualifications?
4: If I DO go for the PhD route, would it be best to go for it this year as a 1+3 studentship (i.e: 1-year fully funded MRes, then 3 years of fully funded PhD study), or to first get a taught masters, then apply for a funded PhD next year?
The pros of the first option are that I would have been earning some money (albeit not much) throughout all of my studies. However, I would be very much "locked in" to a PhD at that point. The pros of the second approach are that the option to take the masters and enter industry is still open, if I decide not to persue a PhD. It would also give me far more flexibility in the PhD programmes I can apply for. However, I would have to pay for the masters, instead of earning money that year.
Anyone who responds, I sincerely value your help! It's an exciting time, but I need to make decisions quickly.
