Why would a potential employer ask for my references and then never call them?

Maybe it was enough that you had references to give. Or if you haven't heard back from them they may have chosen not to hire you before needing to contact anybody. (or in a nicer way chosen to higher somebody else before contacting your references).

I don't see the harm in telling your references that they might get a call, it's not like this was the only job you did/will apply for. They can still be contacted by another company later on.

Companies can be busy, and things move slow. Job hunting also sucks. best of luck

They're probably working on other things. I've never met an efficient HR department.

I forgot to mention that they were very specific about contacting my references, stating that they start calling them the next day at 10 a.m.

I thought it was odd and it just made me a little mad that they never did what they said they would do.

And yes, job hunting sucks. It already starts with these ridiculous application forms that can take HOURS to fill out. And you have to create an account at every place you apply. And when you are lucky and you get invited to an interview they just ask questions they could get answers to by looking at that freaking application form I spent hours to fill out.

It is also possible your references did not give you a good recommendation so they are telling you they were not contacted so you don't blame them if you don't get the job.

It's only Monday so give them time.

Job hunting does suck. Especially when the economy is at maximum employment.

That would never happen. I always use aunts, cousins or uncles with different last name.

Most HR reps (psych majors?) are reading LRC and then posting on LRC under various pseudonyms all day long.
