Lately we hear a lot of speculation that Nike Vaporfly shoes have sent marathon results through the roof.
To verify the claim that Nike Vaporfly shoes have indeed significantly improved race results in recent years I did statistical analysis on all historical sub-2:10 marathon results and compared how many of them were achieved each year in the last decade. If Nike Vaporfly indeed have improved race times, then we should be able to see that as a significant increase in number of sub-2:10 results since year 2016 when Vaporfly shoes were introduced.
As for the data I got my hands on all-time men's best marathon times
http://www.alltime-athletics.com/mmaraok.htm
and filtered out sub-2:10 performances – they totaled 2921 (on 10/20/2019).
Why sub-2:10 and not sub-2:05 or sub-2:15? Because sub-2:05 is only about 210 performances throughout entire athletics history and this is too small of a sample size. With that small sample size a single result would produce about 0.5% deviation in results. Why not sub-2:15? I couldn't get data on that big sample size but if anyone has it let me know and I'll do the calculations.
Here are the sub-2:10 performances by year in the last decade (total sample size is 2921):
2019 – 180 (6.1%)
2018 – 171 (5.9%)
2017 – 186 (6.4%)
2016 – 146 (5.0%)
-----------------------
2015 – 167 (5.7%)
2014 – 196 (6.7%)
2013 – 173 (5.9%)
2012 – 197 (6.7%)
2011 – 174 (6.0%)
2010 – 158 (5.4%)
2009 – 116 (4.0%)
2008 – 106 (3.6%)
Since introduction of Vaporfly shoes in 2016 during span of 4 years we have seen 683 sub-2:10 performances (23.4% of all sub-2:10 performances).
Just prior to introduction of VF shoes during the span of 4 years before year 2016 there have been 733 sub-2:10 performances (25.1% of all sub-2:10 performances).
Actually within span of 4 years, the most amazing stretch of marathon results have been achieved during years 2011–2014 when a total of 740 times sub-2:10 performance have been recorded (25.3% of all sub-2:10 performances).
Bottom line is that there is no statistically significant increase in marathon results since introduction of Vaporfly shoes. Spectacular performances of Kipchoge and Bekele is more of an extreme outliers in entire pool of data. This most probably is because both of these athletes are GOATs.
