so one more vaporfly thread... sorry for that ;-)
But I'd like to share an experiment I did today on a treadmill. I once tried to measure a differency in average heartrate on a 1.6km loop after which I changed my shoes and did not manage to see it. Today morning I put a treadmill to 4min/km and after a warmup ran I ran 8x 6min and switched between the next% and the trainers I use most - Hoka Cliftons. in each 6min, I took the average heartrate with a garmin forerunner 630. Result: 4bpm less in VF. Additionaly the steps went down in VF from 173 to 168/min, vertical oscillation went up about 5mm and ground contact time too went up but very little...
other background: I ran 243 this fall in the VF, started marathon training about 5years back and worked my PB down from 3:20 across the magic 3:00 and 2:50 barrier... I used average trainers in the beginning, then lighter and lighter shoes, like the Saucony Type a for the 2:50. I have trained significantly more for 2:45 than 2 years back for 2:50, but am 45 instead of 43... I dont know how many minutes to attributed to the VF - but definitely less than 5, maybe 3? - but it could be that I'd have missed my sub 245 goal in other shoes.... I really like the effect in the last 10k that your feet dont hurt so much compared to very light shoes. I'll do the treadmill comparison vs the Type A in a few days and let you know ;-)
greetings from Austria!
