I am pro-teacher and support the demands for more mental health counselors and nurses, as well as smaller class sizes in underserved CPS school districts. Teachers should not have to be responsible for a large number of students and have to address mental health and physical health issues that they are not trained in dealing with.
However, the strike has negative consequences on not only the teachers who are sacrificing their livelihood, but also on the students. Other than the fact that students can't go to school, cross country runners who go to a CPS school, can't run in the regional meet today and subsequently will not be able to run in the entire state tournament.
This is wrong. If the strike is truly about the students, support the students for something they will remember for the rest of their lives.
It is a shame that the IHSA and the CTU would rob this opportunity from kids, especially seniors to give up something they worked for the entire school year or even their entire high school career. While I think this IHSA rule unfairly targets Chicago area schools, the responsibility lies in on the CTU members due to their failure to support the students. Unfortunately, many teachers/staff that many want to support their athletes would have to deal with the repercussions from the mob-like CTU, which publicly shames anyone who breaks the picket line, regardless of their intentions.
