How did you do it?
TLDR; Ran a 4x800m on a broken foot, worst pain I've ever been in.
Story time: My freshman year of college I had some discomfort/shooting pain mid-foot after an easy run a couple weeks prior. I went to the AT and they did the tuning fork test for a stress fracture and I didn't feel anything so they said it was most likely just a muscular thing or a strained tendon or something. I think they didn't take me seriously because A. I was a distance runner, and B. I was a freshman. So I kept icing on my own and was doing a lot of cross training on the elliptical and bike, wanted to make it to the indoor conference meet two weeks out so I was being careful.
Conference meet rolls around and my distance coach was well aware that for the last two weeks that I wasn't 100% but I was confident that I could make it through one race for the team. I had done some strides and a few 200m buildups earlier that week to make sure I could do it. I hurt a little, but nothing crazy. 5 min before the race I do a 100m stride and pain shoots up my leg, nothing I can do at this point but try to suck it up. 100m into the race I feel something snap in my foot, and every step is pain. 200m in my eyes are full of tears. I'm the 3rd leg of the race and don't want to let the team down by dropping out so I grit my teeth and power through. I was a 1:58 guy usually, that day I was surprised that I ran 2:18.
Head coach yelled at me after the race, I yelled back at him (not my best moment, but not his either). X-ray later showed that my 2nd metatarsal had completely snapped (during the race).
Nice story, what did your coach say after he found out you had broken your foot? Did he apologize?
Damn, that was painful to read. I hope it healed okay.
Also, I hate that trainers don't take distance runners seriously.
Not me, but a friend's brother was running the state final 4x800 indoor senior year He was the last leg and just started the 50m homestretch. His hip broke, but he made it to the finish line somehow with only a slight hitch in his gait and held off second to win the state title.
No clue how. He's a bit of a legend. Unfortunately never really did much running ever again.
i know this is weak, but in highschool i ran sub 16 with a nasty blister on the ball of my foot. I've never experienced so much pain.
Ran the NYC marathon on a torn peroneal tendon. Found out while training, but told myself I wouldn’t miss the race. Had surgery the next week.
My leg literally fell off doing some 600's
Vertebral stress fracture and sacral stress fracture, both extremely painful
I raced on a broken foot too. Found out after. I remember the night after the race, I was in bed and every time I turned over my foot touched the sheet and it hurt so much.
I had explosive diarrhea during the state finals. I was projected to finish top 15, but halfway through the race, it just exploded. I ended up getting 17th place though, but I smelled like CRAP. It didn't hurt as much physically, but mentally it crushed me. People asked me if there was mud on the course, but I just looked at them and shook my head. Once they got a whiff of me, they knew what happened.
Ran a summer 5k in high school that i preregistered in. Broke my pelvis earlier that week in a motorcycle accident. My dad was mad that I was on the motorcycle and that I preregistered. Told me to run the race. I hobbled it in incredible pain. Didn't realize my pelvis was actually broke until a week later it wasn't getting any better.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
