We just published the men's preview. What will Rupp do in his first race since last year's Chicago and in his first since Alberto Salazar's ban? Should defending champ Mo Farah be considered the favorite or should that honor go to Boston champ Lawrence Cherono?
Make your predictions now.

should any of the non-Rupp americans be considered "elite" ... looks like a huge drop-off to me
-
I reached out to the Chicago organizers to inquire about pacing. These are all tentative times, dependent on weather and athlete discussions -- they could change by the technical meeting.
They will have a group going sub-2:05 pace, paced by Edwin Koech (60:24/2:07:13) and Emmanuel Saina (2:05:02).
There will also be a sub-2:11 group paced by NAZ Elite's Matt Baxter and Sid Vaughn.
For the women, there's a course record group (2:17:18) paced by male pacers, and then sub-2:24, sub-2:26, and sub-2:30 groups.
I assume Brigid Kosgei will be the only woman trying to run course record pace since she's the only woman in the field who has broken 2:20. -
I predict the wheelchair guys will blow all these runners away and get much better media coverage.
-
My ten here are:
L.Cherono
Farah
Mengstu
Chumba
Rupp
Karoki
Tura
B.Abdi
Debela
Osaki -
I predict Emma Bates will have a good showing if all goes well in the GI department. Question, is course record pace too fast for Jordan? Those pacing groups could create quite a few gaps early on...
-
Who's going for Olympic trials qualifiers?
-
I predict the wind wins, and the fastest runner finishes at a high 2:06, at best. This might be Farah, as slow as it will go.
Rupp will DNF, or be back around 2:11. -
Race finishes at a 38°F wind chill and partly cloudy skies. Not the worst, but could certainly affect those with old injuries or recent invasive surgeries.

Yeah, the women's pace groups struck me as a bit odd because 2:17 is too fast for Hasay but 2:24 is too slow. But maybe Hasay goes with Kosgei. When Hasay ran her pb of 2:20:57 in Chicago in 2017, she went with Tirunesh Dibaba and hit halfway in 69:13 and managed to keep it together over the second half. If she's in better shape now, maybe she's okay with going out in 68:30/68:45.
Or maybe she can convince Gelete Burka (2:20:45 pb) to run with her and they just try to find a pack of sub-elite men going out in 69:30 (remember, the men and women start together in Chicago). -
She'll probably latch on to guys trying to get the Olympic Trials Qualifier at 2:19 and I'd imagine there will be a good pack of them.
-
Well Hasay said she wants the American Record, I guess she goes with Kosgei around 68:30 at the Half (And so will Geleta Burka) Kosgei takes off and runs 2:15-2:16, and hopefully Hasay and Burka work together for a high 2:17 or low 2:18

MOST will say wishful thinking and too optimistic, but this is what I hope happens for Hasay (I REALLY believe Kosgei can run 2:15-2:16 on Sunday and could be the next World Record Holder though probably not on Sunday) -
How would one find the 2:24 group?
I doubt they will have a sign?
Anyone know who is pacing it? -
In the race for second American, i have it this way:
Scott Smith
Shrader
Gregg
Estrada
J.Mock
Bumbalough
Fischer
Root [the big improver]
Hampton
Montanez
All before Stinson and Droddy. I guess the last two will go with the pacers attempting to take 3 and 5 minutes off their PB's but Hampton will run them down like he did last year here if they do. -
Anyone have the scoop on Jake Riley?
I thought he'd "retired" a few years back. Anyone know if he's been training for reals??? -
Jonathan,
If you're attending the pre-race press event could you ask Jordan the following questions:
Are you still friends with Alexi?
Do you think it is traitorous of her to run for Greece?
If Nike ever dropped you would you sign with Champion.
Ever watch Emma Abrahamson's YouTube channel?
Do you prefer training in SLO because Portlandia is populated with too many hipsters and smelly vagrants?
Do you think the Mo's British accent is a little annoying? (If you could ask her this with your best Galen Rupp impression, that would be great)
That's it for right now. More to come.

More Questions for Jordan and any other elites:
Do you feel guilty wearing Nike shoes and supporting a company that turns a blind eye to doing business with a country like China who has some of the worst proven records of human rights abuses.
Don't you think Nike is too big and has too much control over the world of sports particularly Track and Field?
Doesn't wearing shoes with springs in them seem like cheating?
Are you leery of running in these big city marathons as they momentarily help bolster the PR of these decaying cities where years of corruption have turned large sections into crime-frenzied, drug-infested locations of squalor and human misery.
Ummm...ever heard of Jamin?
