Citizens oppressed by the totalitarian Chinese government have issued an apology after making life difficult for NBA players over the past week.
"Look, we never meant to make your lives difficult---we are so, so sorry," said a representative for Chinese dissenters. His name has been withheld to protect him from imprisonment or execution by authorities. "We never realized just how hard it was to throw a ball through a hoop and make millions of dollars."
"It was wrong of us to minimize the hurt and pain felt by LeBron James, whose net worth is around half a billion dollars," said the representative. "In fact, I would go so far as to say---"
Unfortunately, his communication with us was cut off as he was apprehended by Hong Kong police.
“Silver said that he felt the NBA was “collateral damage” in the heated trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing.” BS.
How about owning up to the fact that having uninformed or misinformed jocks speaking off the cuff on complex geopolitical issues, and taking on the mantle of slippery “social justice” warriors is simply a bad idea.
Having a business executive walk away without penalty for costing a commercial enterprise billions of dollars is also not a good idea. At any other company he or she would be fired or at least censured.
A young fan duped a cameraman during coverage of the NBA season tipoff Lakers-Clippers game Tuesday night, luring the unsuspecting camera operator in by waving a Clippers jersey — only to drop it and reveal a “Stand with Hong Kong” shirt.
During a pan of the audience for a “Dance Cam” segment, a young fan could be seen jumping up and down with a Los Angeles Clippers jersey. As soon as he realized he’d caught the attention of the camera, he dropped the jersey and held up a T-shirt in support of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong — a topic which has become controversial in regard to the NBA.
A security guard walked up to the pro-Hong Kong group handing out t-shirts outside of the Lakers/Clippers season opener and issued them a warning

Vice President Michael Pence delivers the inaugural Frederic V. Malek Public Service Leadership Lecture. He is expected to discuss the future of the US & China's relationship.
On a more general level, what is the end game here? Sounds like every day HK edges closer and closer to complete anarchy. The government is an unsympathetic, immobile target while the protesters seem to be bands of amorphous activists with no clear leadership nor specific demands. Who does the government get to negotiate or have a dialogue with?
Outside parties will be smart to stay clear of this and let the Chinese sort this out on their own.

Arsenal player Mesut Ozil recently made comments critical of the treatment of the Uighur minority in China on social media, according to Bloomberg. On Twitter and Instagram, Ozil accused Muslims of staying quiet over the mistreatment of the Uighurs, making himself one of the most public figures to condemn China for their actions.
In response, China pulled a live broadcast of an Arsenal match against Manchester City off the air. This was despite the club's best efforts to disassociate itself from the remarks. China instead aired a prerecorded game of Arsenal's cross-town rivals Tottenham Hotspur beating Wolves.
At this rate, China will ban every single sports organization from being televised there

Ratings are down. Theories differ on why.
First the numbers, which don’t look all that good. Overall viewership for the league is down 15 percent, while the numbers are even worse on cable. TNT has seen its viewership down 21 percent while ESPN has seen a 19 percent drop.
Obviously, some of this is due to absent stars. Fully 63 percent of games on cable have had one or more major players out of the lineup, including 11 of 14 on TNT.
The fall of the Golden State Warriors, previously the league’s premier franchise, has also no doubt played a part in this. The Warriors are dumpster fire-level bad this year, posting a 9-24 record so far — after a four-game winning streak.
On the other hand, the Lakers are better than the Metta years.
