Actually the Monza event was a bonafide competition Sanctioned by the Italian Athletic's Federation. There where three athletes all treated equally. The fact that there were pace setters coming in and out plus other technical difference only prevented the performances to be used for records, rankings, and qualifying for other events.

in that race, Nike also had kipchoge swallow "thermometer pills" so they could study him on a computer throughout the race.

that race was a scientific experiment put on by nike, his sponsor. this new event is not a human experiment. its just a good ole fashioned attempt at breaking a wr, with some extra pace setters in the mix. nothing scientific or cheating about it.

I wouldn't call it bonafide. It was not a real marathon, and was just an time trial exhibition. The whole event was set up to get the fastest time with extra help.

If performances like that were used as marathon record we would never see another marathon record in a true race.

Not unimportant in a marathon -

they optimize the following things, in addition to already mentioned ones:

- location. The course is absolutely flat, on new asphalt that's extremely quick. Even in an Adidas shoe I'm 2 sec/k faster on this asphalt than on a normal one at the same heart rate.

- temperature. They have a 300 hour window in which they can choose the perfect temperature. They narrowed it down now to 4 days or so.

- wind. same as above, they will do the run when there is zero wind, which in Vienna is usually in the morning.

No one will ever be able to run this course again. Half of Vienna's traffic is being closed (the entire Reichsbruecke, one of the busiest streets in Vienna that normally only gets closed once a year during VCM and the Praterstern as well). MANY marathons have terrible conditions, either they are warm, or they are super windy like Berlin was. Without the wind, Bekele would have gone MUCH faster.

And now you still wanna set this as the official WR? Get a life.

The pace makers rotating throughout the race is what makes it illegal. Unless all pace makers started with Kipchoge all at once and dropped off throughout the race, it's illegal.

Yes, it makes it non conforming for records, rankings and qualifying but is still ok as long as all of the athletes are treated equally. Ten of thousands of Sanctioned events are held each year that don't meet all of the rules....think about it.

I agree with this. There are minimal differences between this and Paula's 2:15. She had rabbits the entire way.

She didn't have drinks at any time during the race, but really? There are tons of drink stations in regular marathons, and it's not like this makes it easier.

The rest of it is contrived but time trial races are perfectly legal for record attempts.

Radcliffe 2:15 record is for mixed event.

For women only event, it's not recognized.

The primary difference is Kipchoge is handed a drink by a biker moving at his same pace so he doesn't have to slow down or move out of the shortest possible path to 26.2. Even grabbing something from a table or volunteer slows you down a slight bit and adds up over 2 hours.

Does anyone know if the course has zero cant? Meaning deadflat along the width; not a really marathon road surface.
