What a crazy race. Holloway had the lead but McLeod started to gain on him. But then McLeod hit the next to last hurdle and lost all control. He went flying into the lane next to him and hit Ortega. Ortega was clearly in 2nd place and on his way to silver. As a result, he faded to 5th.
I know the rule book allows for races to be re-run. But can you re-run a race just for 6 of the people?
In my mind, the fairest thing to do is hand the gold to Holloway, DQ McLeod and then run it again for the other 6.
Drama in men's 110h: IAAF, Give Holloway the gold but re-run the hurdles for everyone else (save McLeod)!!!

It would not be fair to make Holloway rerun the race.
McLeod is a clear DQ.
Your solution seems like the logical and fair way to proceed, which is why they will probably go a different direction. -
You want so badly to be a sports commentator with hot takes like the big stars. You don't have it, son.

No, this is why Shubenkov was happy to run from lane 9, away from McLeod. This clown already took out Shubenkov early in the year causing him to lose training time. No way Ortega was beating Shubenkov who was closing like a freight train as usual.
-
Exactly!!! I was thinking the same thing.

How are the lanes determined in hurdles?
-
They have the rules in the rule book for a reason. I just never seen it used. Why have it in the rule book if you aren't ever going to use it? And I'm not sure if it can be done without making everyone re-run the race. Ues, it's not fair for Holloway, that's why I say give him the gold.
But it's not fair for a guy to train his whole life and then have a medal taken from him because some guy comes into his lane.
Here is a video of what I'm talking about.

If you are never going to re-run a race, then get it out of the rule book. -

Mcleod chose the lane next to ortega not the other way around. Ortega was really upset and knows exactly what macleod does and says he does it tacticly.
-
Plus a re-run would create great TV ratings.
-
If it's a distance final and someone gets pushed and falls they don't rerun the race. A runner that committed a foul gets a DQ but if you start rerunning races for everything that goes wrong then where does it stop?
It's sports and there is always some luck involved. -
Why should Shubenkov have his silver put at risk? He overcame a lousy start and outran PML and didn't interfere with anyone.
-
No chance it will happen.
The final has been played and its the rule of the game. -
They also did not race again in the rasta rocket movie.

I believe there have been two occasions of McLeod running into Shubenkov, but I'm too lazy to dig up the other video. -

And Devon Allen ran a horrible race. I'm sure he would like a rerun but why should he get another chance? -

Yeah, I'm sure tons of people would flock to their TVs to see a re-run of an event -- MINUS the best guy in the field -- that I imagine barely anyone watched in the first place. -

I agree however, the only people who should be permitted to do a re-run is to where McLeod materially affected the outcome of their race. The only person who would qualify for the re run is Ortega. Nobody else should be allowed to re run because their own individual race was not impacted by McLeod's actions. I'd say let Ortega do a solo re-run and if his time is faster than anyone on the medal podium make the shift from there.
Another option is for the IAAF to place in a rule where if you materially affect the outcome of someone else's race, you should be fined a monetary value and the person affected would then receive that as compensation. -
Sh1t happens in sports, deal with it.

I agree with you that only Ortega should get to do a re-run, but it's not fair to the other athletes to get bumped by him. So I think they should let Ortega do a re-run, and if he finishes on the podium then give him an extra (4th) medal. I.e. if he finishes in the silver position, then give one gold, two silver medals, and one bronze.
