Amazing, smart run by Coburn. The current crop of US distance runners are so good that we have become inured to how great of an accomplishment something like this is. Eight years ago she would get a black page for a Silver medal at worlds. Now, there are hardly any comments. She got some criticism for her last race where she went out too fast. She deserves praise for taking risks, learning from her experiences and for her outstanding accomplishments. She is a phenomenal athlete.

One other thing worth noting is that in the ultimate race of the year Emma ran a PR, while Chepkoech ran 13 seconds slower than her PR. The legitimacy of her 8:44 performance should be seriously questioned.
It has been questioned since the night it was run! But as long as there are no positive tests, nothing doing.
While she has not come within 10 sec., Chepkoech has just run sub 9 with a considerably too fast first k an no pacers. Give her pacers and start with 2:56 she might not have run her record but probably 8:50. And while this might make her more suspicious not less, she also has by far the fastest 3k/5k flat times of any of the top steeplers. And the next is probably Coburn, so this is consistent.
What make you think she was aiming for the record?
She cruised in control for the second half of the race to be sure to finally win the gold medal and did not take the risk to crash out.
Coburn dog walked Courtney.

lol pathetic. The reason Chepkoech is head and shoulders above everyone else is that she is the only one with a decent running/hurdling combination. All other east africans suck at crossing the barriers and the westeners with much better hurdling technique are just fucking slow in comparison with Chepkoech who isn't even world class in a flat event herself. I mean, Coburn and Frerichs wouldn't even make the team in any other event and while Krause might be able to do it thanks to worse national competiton, she would be eliminated im the first round of any event.
Chepkoech was out in 2:53, two seconds ahead of her world record pace, and she had no pacers, so her form was good but probably more like 8:50 shape with pacers. You might also want to consider that the conditions in Doha are not ideal for the distances, though far better than you would have thought in an open air stadium.

Yes, and criminals aren't a problem unless they've actually been arrested.
Congrats to Coburn and Krause.
Racist turd...

Great runner and excellent strategy.
Dominant performance by Chepkoech but kudos to Emma Coburn, who really knows how to rip her best performances when it really matters.
BTC strategy of barely racing biting itself in its arse again. Courtney could have been much sharper with more experience racing this season.
Yeah I have to agree with this to be honest.
Emma Coburn's flat 3k PB is 8:48. And she's run 9:02 with that. The hurdles in the women's steeple are so small it slows the athletes by 15-20s at best. 8:48 is just not that fast amongst elite women.
Chepkoech has run 8:28. I'd bet she breaks 8:40 if she attempts it to be honest.
Laura Muir has run 8:26. Are you really telling me she'd struggle to run 9:00 with those tiny barriers?
3k steeple is the weird event where those not good enough for the 5k compete.

Gotta agree with that for once. Gesa Krause raced significantly in the DL over the summer and had some crappy races until her form pointed upwards towards the end. Sometimes runner do better when they just race a couple more times instead of never.

Frerichs is mentally weak.
I was very impressed by Denmark's Anna Emilie Møller. Just turned 22 this summer, broke her own national record for 7th place in 9:13!
Where are the 100s of morons that said Coburn was finished and would never be the best US Steeple lady again?
Krause's bronze seems like a huge upset no? She must be thrilled.
Eilish McColgan has run 8:31 or so. Just look up what she ran in the steeple (hint: not very good, a minute slower or so). It's not that easy despite the low barriers and some runners simple cannot do it well. Coburn also ran faster indoors, I think around 8:40. One also needs to keep in mind that many steeplers hardly ever run flat 3k/5k in top shape or seriously at all.
But generally I agree. Chepkoech is the only world class steepler with flat times somewhat close to world class (4:02i, sub 8:30 and 14:40) who can also decently hurdle. The other good hurdlers are usually not as good. And the good hurdlers are often 15:10/8:45 flat runners or slower.
Last two sentences are misleading: The other strong runners are not so good at hurdling. And the best hurdlers like Krause and the Americans are mostly only middling flat runners.
