This strikes me as an unnecessary use of foam - nobody lands that far back on their heel. And if they do, its so thin at that point that it wouldn't be stable... Is there some aerodynamic reason for this or do they just want the shoes to look unique?

The narrow heels of those shoes run on my right heels so much during a race that they bleed every time I’m not wearing long socks.

They are specifically placed there to help you remove your shoes when tired and stiff after
a long run. Just step on them and yank your foot out....no need to bend over or even unlace!

Aerodynamics. They are optimized in a windtunnel. If course this matters more at higher speeds
because it looks different and makes people think that it's doing something
