Hello,
I am a freshman in college and I am loving my time here so far. I'm running at an NCAA Division 3 school and we're in full swing right now with racing 8k's in cross country. So far I have not done terrible, my first 8k I ran in 26:59 which I'm hoping I can get down to a sub-26:30 by the end of the season. In high school though, I had a lot more success running the 800m as I ran a 2:01 my senior year. My worry is, we're doing a lot more mileage than I have ever done in high school, and though I haven't gotten injured from it, I am worried that the quantity of slower mileage that we're doing is going to make me slower for an 800. So maybe this is just me fretting, but can a runner who wants to focus more so on speed (like the 800) still see improvements in the 800 through high mileage training in cross country? The big goal for me is to break 2 minutes in track, and I'd hate to not be able to do that because my muscles got too used to slow-twitch training. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thank you, and happy running.
