Is anyone else terrified? The instant I saw this I had an intense feeling of anxiety. Sure, nothing will change for maybe a few years but once it starts there's no stopping it. If the fall of the Soviet Union was "The End of History" , will this be the beginning of post-history?

I work on quantum computing research at a national lab here in the US and have a couple of things I’d like to point out: while we don’t know what algorithm the Google QC was able to complete, it can’t be taken away how big of a milestone this is. HOWEVER, I hate terms like “quantum supremacy” because they’re very sensationalized as to be well suited for media attention. A QC being able to complete one very specific task faster than a supercomputer wouldn’t make me say that they’re superior (not saying you or even the article said that — it’s just what a lot of people may take away from the headline.) Ultimately, I think we’re still ~20 years out from achieving full scale, reliable quantum computation and even then I think it would an even longer time to even come close to the theoretical potential of these devices. So I think we have some time before true quantum supremacy is achieved, and with it, the takeover of the bots.
