I wish that were true but I don’t think it is.

Washington Head Coach Andy Powell said the real training begins Monday for the group which was "not quite where we need to be" on a hot and humid day on the East Coast today, but that "we know where we need to go."
They were missing their top guy but otherwise, that’s their team, right? -
My goodness!
-
I’m sure they’re training through and were just tempoing.

3rd-12th-26th-48th-67th. That isn't "tempoing". You can't tempo and finish 3rd in that field and then have the rest of your teammates finish roughly 12 to 22 spots back each time. -
1. Training
2. Tempoing
3. Tempo 1st half, race 2nd half
4. Coming down from hard training block 3 weeks at altitude
5. Jet lag from 3 altitude weeks then XC flight to Boston
6. B Team
7. Mix of A team B team
8. Haven’t started real training
9. Raced in training shoes
10. Ran 10k pace
Yuge budget for 3 wk altitude, XC Flight -
Mick Stanovsek, a 3:57 miler, in 26:01. Of course, a few years ago, Emmanuel Korir and his teammate Michael Saruni ran around 34 or 35 at regionals in xc. Why go across the country when the team is not ready?
-
Stony Brook?!
-
No Drew Jordan for Washi from either.
Shout out Jake Brophy from Navy for second, don’t sleep in this guy this season. -
I stand corrected, I didn’t realize he was that far back...

1) It might have been their B team.
2) If it wasn't, that's kind of why I started the thread - to ask that question. It costs a lot to fly across the country so why do it if you aren't going to run an A team and go for it. If it's their A team, it's a horrible result.
3) But why do it? Well the Andy is from MA so it's a free trip home and it probably helps with East Coast recruiting.
4) It's extravagant for teams to do stuff like this if they aren't going to race all out. People want to know why colleges cost 75k per year and it's because every department has to have the very best of everything. When I was coaching, I never thought kids needed to fly to CA to ru 14:15 but since every other team in the league was doing it, I felt like if we didn't do it, then we were at a recruiting disadvantage. -
I picked up the Herald this morning and I was surprised to see full length picture of this meet on the front page and good sized write up.
Wish I had known and I would have gone over. Looked like a good meet. -
The insatiable recruiting/publicity machine must be fed!

Vin lanana brought Stanford into Boston on recruiting trips ran at BU and Reggie Lewis in 1990’s. I personally saw Gabe Jennings Michael steeper etc run sub 4:00 at bu.
Then he brought Oregon to franklin park for Xc a few years back cheserek.
Andy Powell using same playbook.
Boston is a hotbed for distance running.
Want me to name all the studs from mass? -
You don’t travel 3,000 miles to tempo.

L O friccing L at weak little west coasties calling that weather hot and humid. it was sweater weather this morning for anyone from the eastern seaboard. -
Sorry Rojo. It wasn't Washington's "A" team that was there. It was kind of a mix of different guys. Don't worry. Come late November at NCAA Nationals Syracuse will be getting crushed by Washington, BYU, NAU, Stanford, Iowa and a few others.

Washington held out only 1 of their projected top 4 (Proctor). They very clearly were not tempoing as their 5k splits and finishing times are all strung out.
Just for some perspective, they only had 3 guys beat my personal time from that course and I've never broken 15 for 5k. It's super early, but that is not the performance of a podium contender. If you want a trophy you need 5 guys waaaaaaay better than me. -
UW didn't run Sam Tanner, Joe Wascom, Slenning or Tibs.
Syracuse ran a nice race; just doesn't mean much come November.
Re: why UW would make the trip with an incomplete squad... they still racked up a few W's vs teams that could qualify. Useful with the current qual system and tough region.
