As much as I’d like the world to be as straight forward as it’s supposed to be, am I the only person that doesn’t dismiss an athletes achievements even once caught doping.
For example, as far as I’m concerned Lance Armstrong still rode his bike across the finish line first on multiple occasions in the most brutal bike race in the world. That is an achievement even doped to the gills.
Same for Ben Johnson, Marion Jones, Barry Bonds.
Yes they had help. But to just put it down purely to drugs and PEDs does them an incredible dis-service. They still trained, had the ability, mindset and determination to deliver at the highest level.
I know the chorus of “cheat”, “disgrace”, etc. Are the labels they get. But their achievements are magnificent by anyone’s standards.
I still look at them as winners, even though I know I shouldn’t. But the worlds a rough place out there and they did what they had to do.
If El-Guerrouj one day admits to PED use does it really make him not an incredible athlete? We all need to get out of la la land.
