I think I took his performances the last two years for granted. Then he started a little slow this year but he was running the 10,000 and I figured once he got back to focusing on 10k he'd be fine.
But he's not the same runner.
I don't have much hope for him turning it around by Worlds. Pre was a good run for him.
Anyone confident he can turn it around?
Hate to say it, but I don't know how you could read this article and think that having a baby hasn't affected his ability to train to his maximum ability: https://spikes.iaaf.org/post/paul-chelimo-fatherhood . Sounds like he's been playing catch-up all year. He's not rich enough to pay for help (apparently) or have his wife not work, so this is just something he's gotta adjust to.

Yeah that would throw off focus. Hope he can get string it back together again.
Somehow I blanked on the baby. Maybe then with another month of uninterrupted training he'll be ready for Worlds.

He isn't really being a parent though. He has not been in Colorado very much at all for months so fatherhood isn't the issue here. Maybe injury, wada testing, lack of motivation?

I wasn't expecting necessarily a seasonal best but you can't deny his results aren't as good this year. The blessing for him is Worlds are in a month and he can focus on training for them. The baby thing makes total sense but he needs to get fitter very quick. He did run 13:05 this year. One issue for Chelimo is he has never done that well in fast races.
He did great last year on DL but all the races he did well in were slow 5ks or 3ks. The one fast 5k he didn't do that well.
Last year in DL:
2, 2, 4, 1, 6th in a PR of 12:57
This year most of the races have been faster which isn't his forte.
This year in DL:
12th, 5th, 2, 6th, 8th
So it may be a combo of a) faster races and b) the baby.
The good thing for him is he has another month and the Worlds won't have a rabbit.

This has been a weird track season. It will be interesting to take a look at who shows well at Worlds and compare it to what we have seen in the Diamond League. More than anything I hope we hear interviews about how training has been structured for the 5/10k fields with Worlds being so late. What worked? What didn’t? What people would have done differently?
Hmmm ... if only there were a couple guys who operate a running site who have access to such athletes who could ask such questions ...
Yeah he says he got an injury from holding the baby. Along with not having the same training or recovery time he had before. Wait till the kid starts to walk, then he really will be exhausted. Imo he either needs to either consider putting the kid in daycare or having his wife home more. That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t carry his load of taking care of the kid but he needs to carve out at least 5-6 hours everyday where he can train and recover kid free.
It’s amazing to me how many pro runners try to be stay at home parents. Kids are too unpredictable for that to work long term.

He's fine. It would have been nice if he'd run faster at Zurich but he could very well be in a heavy training block. Centro doesn't exactly burn up the Diamond League -- has he ever won one -- but he consistently medals in championships. Chelimo is probably more like Centro, a racer not a time trialer.
