Can he pull it off? He ran 3:31 in Monaco, and 13:05 in London off a pretty slow pace. He's in the shape of his life but Mottram's record is pretty tough.

Don't think he's going to get sub 12:55. Is the DL Final paced? If not, I don't like his chances. If it is and someone pushes, I like his chances if the winning time is 12:56 or faster.
If he really is running Zurich and the conditions are right, I don't see how he can't go below 12:55.
12:51 is my guess.
Last year in Brussels there were 3 pacers and they went out on 12:50 pace or so, then Kejelcha pushed the pace to the end.

You being for real? Just joking? Can't tell.
This guy has zero chance of 12:55, let alone 12:51. I'll give him some far off remote chance of 12:59. Most likely will finish in a respectable 13:11.
Wha? Are you joking? We are talking about McSweyn. Did you confuse him with someone else? Only way he is running 13:11 is if he is injured, or if the winning time is 13:10/13:11.
Anyway, don't know if he really is running Zurich. I do see he is running another 1500 in Paris in a few days.
He would have to go sub 12:55.76 for the Australian record.
He confirmed he will take part in both Paris and Zurich, then get a last training block before Doha.
Still to be confirmed if he doubles 5000-10000m at the worlds or goes for 5000-1500m.
He has to beat 12:58 to prove himself better than the original Galen Rupp.
Aussie record in the 1500 going down in Paris.
McSweyn has a better shot of medaling in the 10 than the 15. With the 5000 first in the worlds schedule he can focus everything on that.
At the moment his best distance seems to be the 5,000m surely, but in time who knows.
I don't think he can beat Gregson's 1500m national record, maybe if they were racing in Monaco instead. I'm very confident he's in 12:5x shape, no doubt about that. Only concern is the pacemakers to do a good job and the altitude of Zurich, which is 400m or 1300 feet, which can't really be ideal, right?
Food for thought, what do you think McSweyn could run right now for a 10,000m? I'd say 27:10-27:20, i guess he is probably at Wanders' level in the 10,000m right now. In a right race, St Lawrence's national record of 27:24 seems at peril.
I would also love Stewart to have a shot at Mottram's 3000m national record, as he's only 2.5 seconds away and in much better shape right now.
Wanders confirmed he'll run the 5000m too in Zurich! It would be amazing if J.Ingebrigtsen would run it too.
Without Cheruiyot, the Paris 1500m has less chance of being a pr race for him and others. The DL final might well not be a fast race, but if it is, sub 13 is very much possible, though I can't see a 12:55 just yet, maybe 12:58-59. This guy has had a tremendous year, very much unexpected.
Mottram did run 3:48, which is better than his 3:33, but McSweyn should be able to get that 3k record. The 3k record is a bit soft. Buster ran 8:03 for the win at Pre. He had to have been in sub-7:30 3k shape at that time and maybe close to 12:50 shape.
I agree that 5,000 is Stewy’s best distance at the moment but given his run at Bernie 10 I think he’ll be a medal threat at 10k one day. Perhaps I’m being too generous, but if he’s in sub-13 shape he’s probably also in sub-27 shape. I’d back Stewy over Wanders on the track at 10k. Stewy has yet to give a fair dinkum crack at 10k.

We are now saying 400m above sea level could be a problem? Come on stop being such a baby. You do realize that a few WRs at 1500, mile, steeple and 5k have all been set in that stadium so don't think the "altitude "is an issue
I only said it won't be ideal, not that it can't be done or as an excuse. However, Zurich has very good, reliable weather conditions.
He's 6'2". What is with tall Aussie runners?
I really thought Tiernan or McDonald would be at this level. Surprised to see McSweyn is much better.
Ran 3:31.81 while getting ready for the Zurich 5,000m finals, he's quietly getting ready to make a big impact on thursday!
Yes, would be amazing if Jakob did run! But he isn't qualified for the 5000 final, as he has not run 3000 or 5000 in a Diamond League this year. His London race was a invitational event.
But next year...
