Pretty good for a guy who was ran 3:53/8:18 (8:53 steeple)/14:21 while in college at Syracuse. He's now coached by John Aris - son of legendary HS coach Bill Aris.

In 1964 Bill Dellinger worked in a lumber mill pulling green chain. It's hard physical work. He looked at every movement as training, and did it show over the last lap of the Tokyo 5000m. While Bob Schul took the gold on that sloppy cinder track, Dellinger was digging in deep. You could see it in his arms, all of that lifting gave him the strength to nail down the Bronze medal at the finish.
Doing hard work in difficult conditions, then going out for serious training is definitely a handicap, because you're going to have a lot of days where you really just want to take it easy. However, it also makes you awfully tough, mentally, if you get through it.
Big difference between 30 hours and 70 hours a week, though. I suspect he had a lot more 30 hour weeks than 70 hour weeks.

He ran 2:13:39 at Grandma's this year. He's the real deal and I can confirm his story, hell I had dinner with him a few weeks ago

His arms may have been strong for a distance race, but I doubt they were much use at his lumber mill job.

Or he wouldn't have been as fatigued and won the gold. We'll never really know;)
Cool, story. Sad to see all the doubters. It can be done (not by many), and no doubt a great accomplishment. I’m personally rooting for the guy.
