They've massively cut down on cars in the city centre here. One of the problems is there is no centralised bus station and the journeys are all fragmented. People would end up getting a taxi over and over. One of the main streets is snarled up with taxis on Friday and Saturday night to the point they had to divert the busses around the street, adding about 20 minutes on to the journey (but faster than going down that road).
The scooters have been incredibly popular. They seem to be used for 2-3 mile journeys to link one mode of transport to another, i.e. train to bus.
I do agree there could be problems with them being on the pavements though. Nothing has been reported so far. Not seen anyone on the electronic skateboards (Boosted boards). These electric light vehicles are good options for commuting in the city centre.
For one of my years at uni I decided to commute in by bike. The problem was that there was a large hill on the way into uni. I just got fed up of getting there, rushing into a hot lecture theatre and sitting there with sweat dripping down my back, it was gross. University buildings are massively over-heated and going into that from the cold and pedalling up hills is not pleasant. One of my friends has bought an e-bike and he says it's changed everything for him.
