Those shoes are a disadvantage in the mountains and most technical terrain.
It's not Walmsley's fault (although he's not recovered from Western States), but too much foam between the foot and the terrain. No HOKA athlete has ever won a major mountain race like UTMB - it's always Salomon or Asics guys.
Not a great trail shoe. Great for flat dirt running, but get into scree and the skags like Norway and Scotland, you have no chance with that footwear choice.
Walmsley Can't Compete Against Kilian Because of HOKA Shoes

Asics?

He won't win because he's not as good at mountain running -
Well, Asics came to mind because Xavier Thevanard has won it like 5 times.

Last time I checked Tim Tollefson won Laverado which is a pretty big and long mountain race in Italy. He's also finished 3rd at UTMB twice. So pretty sure the shows aren't the issue. You also clearly have never seen the Evo Mafate as it is very specifically a mountain racing 100 mile shoe.

*shoes...damn.

Everyone is already making excuses. He won’t win cause he sucks against competition. He can only win when he’s confident he can win. Doesn’t matter what he’s wearing. He wore Adidas and New Balance prior to Hoka and still sucked.

This ranks as one of the dumbest posts I've read on LRC in a long time.
To all those who replied ... Bravo! Those brain cells weren't firing today, huh... -
Time trialist, you may honestly be the dumbest person to ever post on LR with the exception of Jamin. Walmsley sucks? How many times does he have to set a CR anywhere for you to change your opinion? He just set the 40 year 50 mile WR. Killian has never come close to that or the 100k WR, or the 100 mile WR. Does Jim need to win WS for a 3rd time in a row while setting yet another CR for you to stop being an ass hat? Does he need to set the 100k WR for your brain to suddenly start working?

Do you realize you come across as Walmsley fanboy? In almost every single post you take the opportunity to elevate him and denigrate others, especially Jornet. With this kind of teenager bias your posts are garbage kid. -

Walmsley broke an old not contested 50 mile record. Nobody runs this distance on roads. It's not a thing, it never was.
Walmsley will never brake the 100k WR. He can't pace himself right. He just ran a 6:55 ish I think at the Hoka event. That was 25 minutes slower that the current World Champion in the same race. -
I would suspect it has more to do with the demographics of their sponsored athletes? European runners tend to do better in the big-vert mountain races of Europe and Salomon sponsors more elite Europeans.

I wear these and they're great lightweight racers but they're so unsupported and soft your feet would be smashed on a long mountain race with rocky terrain.
Best for soft terrain by a mile. -
Getting real here, way to ignore every other data point in order to point out one race where he only managed to set one world best and not two. What an abject failure. Kipchoge is such a crappy runner too. Can you believe he didn't break the half marathon world best enroute to setting the marathon world best. What a joke! He should pack it in now.
As an FYI, it is a near certainty Jim will break the 100k world best now that he doesn't have to worry about 50 miles. He absolutely can pace himself, as proven by the fact he has now won states twice in a row, each time with a CR. How on earth have you possibly managed to convince yourself that he can't pace himself? Don't be a hater just because you can't even run 1 mile at his 50 mile pace. -

Why are you so stupid? -
Jim is an incredible athlete that has been smashing records for fun.
But I agree that the Hoka offerings for SZ in not the best. Definitely need a more agile and better ground contact option. For something like Zegama they would be even worse.
But still. He got one of the fastest times there in its history and broke the previous American best without a truly focussed effort. So who knows. -

Jim won't break the 100k World Record. He can't pace himself. You could see that at the Hoka 100 where he went out too fast and was relying on his false Strava information. (Have a look at his interview) Hideaki Yamauchi ran a great race and finished in 6:19:54. An absolute fantastic time. But nobody talked about that because everybody was focusing what Jim was doing.
The 50 mile "record" was 40 years old and was never a real distance anybody raced. So that was a very low hanging fruit. -
why is wejo and letsrun not putting this story on the front page?
useless website... or interests are not aligned?
just a month ago letsrun was all over walmsley on the 50m record and the WS100. nothing now. on one of the most amazing records and performances by jornet -
No he won’t break the 100k record. He continues to wilt against competition and can only win when there’s no competitive pressure.

Wejo figured out that almost nobody was interested in ultrarunning stories. He is also wearing all the promised Hoka shoes, he was supposed to give away.
