Decathlon is not the hardest. No f***ing way.
I did the decathlon senior year for FUN. And it was not difficult. Lots of standing around, waiting for your turn.
Maybe TRAINING for the decathlon is the hardest, but the event itself is not difficult.

maybe if you're doing it for FUN it's not difficult. when i do 5Ks for FUN they really aren't that hard. lots of jogging around. of course, when i do 5Ks to WIN they become considerably more difficult. i imagine the same is true for the decathlon.
Please rank the toughest 5 events in track and field, don't forget the field events and the multis.
Decathlon
The rest are all tied for second.
On the women's side it is the hep, with all the others tied for 2nd.
well, I think I'd get killed if I even tried to pole vault
Before I make my top 5, my background is the 400 to the mile.
1. Decathalon (without a f'in doubt the hardest).
2. Mile (1500)
3. 800
4. 400 Hurdles
5. Steeple
Very similar,
1. Decathelon
2. Pole Vault - (The technical aspect puts it ahead of the next three, which are in a tie).
3. Steeple
4. 800m
5. 400m hurdles
Decathlon
Well it's not going to be hard if you don't eve try and treat it as a joke. You could just jog round the 400 and claim it was easy.
Decathalon gets my vote - Heptathlon for women. Women should do Decathlon too.
Jack of all trades, master of none.
Oh great, another thread where every person has a different definition of "hard" (physical exertion? technical prowess? pure guts?), so they just wine and banter back and forth, comparing apples to oranges to bananas and no viable conclusion is ever even remotely approached.
Who said I did it as a joke? I trained for it, every day after regular practice. The most difficult events for me to learn were shot, disc, PV, and the hurdles. Everything else I was already decent at.
On day 1 I ran my 100 as hard as I could, I did all 3 of my jumps in the long jump as best I could, did my three throws in the shot as best I could, made it through 3 rounds of high jump, and ran a pr in the 400.
But there was simply so much standing around waiting for the next event, and each attempt at each event was so short, it was easy. A hard day in the weight room or running the 800, 1600, and 4x4 at a dual meet is ten times harder.
On day 2 I ran the hurdles and sucked - that was my worst event. Got three solid throws of the disc in, unfortunately only made it over the opening height of the PV, got my three jav throws in, and then ran a decent 1500 considering I was all alone and having to push myself for time.
And, last post against the decathlon, but I don't see how you can compare that event to middle distance and distance running.
Alberto Salazar had to be given last rites after Falmouth. Bob Kempainien had to power through the last few miles of the marathon Trials one year despite the fact that he was vomiting. Ridiculous that anyone can compare throwing a spear, jumping over a bar, and running a 400 to that.
I don't care what you did in your decathlon. I don't train for the mile and I guarantee you I could pr in it without exerting too much effort. It doesn't make it easy. Try training and doing WELL in a dec and then talk about the dec being an f-ing joke. You list 3 middle distance events and say that they are harder than the dec. The question isn't what combination of events is harder than a dec. Those are 3 scoring events, the dec is one.
to be fair, if he went all-out in each event, how did he exert any less effort than an elite athlete who goes all-out in each event?
i say marathon
oops, 10,000 meters if we're talking t&f
I gave a list according to what I thought would be difficult to do for myself.
Thanks for the proclamation while gracing us with your presence on this thread.
this thread is going to suck hot dick, but i'll put in anyway...
i wanna say the 800 and or the 4 hurdles...
in my opinion as someone who ran 1:50 in the 8, 3:46 15, and an 8:14 3k i know a little something about versatility and i want to give it up to the 8 and 4 hurdle people...

No problem, loyal subject.
What's so versatile about that?
Any good 1500 runner out there (and you seem to be one of them) will be able to put up a decent 800 and 3000.
