It's interesting. The more recent collegian tends to be in your mind so I was thinking, "McDonald should be paid more." Afterall he did win more NCAA titles (4 vs 2). But let's see if the facts support that.
They basically are the same age. Knight turned 23 2 days ago and McDonald in April. So if Knight had been in college this year, McDonald might not have a lot more NCAA titles. let's compare their PBs by years.
5000s McDonald Vs Knight
2016 13:29.79 vs 13:26.36
2017 13:15.83 vs 13:17.51
2018 13:19.05 vs 13:18.74
Pretty much dead even.
3000 pb McDonald Vs Knight
2016 7:52.09 OTi 2016 7:48.71 OTi
2017 7:51.19i 2017 7:47.82 OTi
Very similar as well.
1500 pb. McDonald Vs Knight
2014 3:45.92 2014 3:47.39
2016 3:46.37 2016 3:39.23
2017 3:41.01+ 2017 3:42.11
2018 3:39.14 2018 3:36.07
Slight edge to Knight
So I'd hope the offers were very similar as it's really hard to separate the two.
PS. Making up for the fact that Knight only won 2 NCAA titles is the fact that Canada is about 50% bigger in population than Australia (I would have never guessed that 37 million vs 24 million)
I really wish the shoe companies would make the contract amounts public.
Yeah good analysis- theyre obviously the same runner basically. J knight seems more marketable- Id go with him!
someone on these boards once said Nike offered J Knight 80K- reebok offered him 150k

Both are boring , uninspiring runners who won't lie profusely about their training. We need more athletes like Nick Symmonds.

It takes a very strong union to get public contract/salary amounts. There's not enough money in running to make a strong union.
How does it take so much $

no nick, we do not need more tools like you.
I'd bet on Justyn Knight since I think he's more recognizable, Canada is closer to the US, and he led his team to better XC results.
Strange to fawn over 2 guys whose best 5k's at signing were not even fast enough to be bekele's pace for 10k. These guys wouldn't even be offered shoes in some parts of the world.
knight on 150K?
Knight got the bigger deal.
No wonder Reebok being sold.
No return on investment at this point.
When are Canadian Trials?
That Reebok group, and if those numbers are close to true, INCLUDING 2 FULL-TIME COACHES, seems like the most charitable money spent in years!

Looks like only McDonald had an improvement this year.

Related to their marketability in their home country?
McDonald is unknown to all but the hardcore network of Aussie runners. He has currently zero marketing pull in Australia. McSweyn has edged slightly into being known within the less hardcore running circles. Tiernan is pretty much where McDonald is.
There is no market for these guys in Australia as the sport does not rate a mention in the media here.
