I've been reading a couple of training articles from the 50's and 60's about the interval training methods used by a lot of people such as Kutts and Igloi. I know recently interval training has got a bad name and people are scared of too much, but was there something to this type of training? Such as large amounts of 100s, 200s, and 300s with short recovery at moderate speeds? It seems like you could tolerate this stuff year round basically. Could it be that the moderate paces and short distances allowed these runners to use all of their muscle fibers (ST, and both FT fibers) without going anaerobic because of the moderate intensity and short interval?
Also, anyone explain the effects of certain workouts would be physiologicaly (such as how would the lactate builup progress over the workout, how much would be built up, would it stress the VO2max systems, etc.)
20x100m at mile pace with 50m jog recovery
20x200m at 5k pace with 100m jog recovery
etc.
Also guys like Igloi, used sets effectively, what are the benefits of sets? Such as 6x100, rest, 6x200, rest, 6x300.
Just trying to learn from what past runners did and see if there could be any use for previous types of training?
