I'm trying to keep my heart rate in the correct zones while running my easy runs and tempos. Is it the average of the total run that matters or keeping it in the correct zone throughout the run that is important? For example, when I do a 4 mile tempo, my first mile is always lower than threshold effort, but my last two are usually about 10 beats higher than threshold effort, even though the pace stays the same. My run averages out to a threshold effort, but one or two of the miles is at a heart rate that is closer to 95% of max. This is especially the case during the summer. I know that it's important not go too hard of an effort in a tempo, so was hoping someone could give their thoughts on if its the average of the whole run that matters, or making sure that the hr is always in the correct zone for the duration of the run.
