This. Strava isn't the problem. There are plenty of people on Strava that are capable of training smart. There might be a handful that do that garbage training you speak of. I would suggest unfollowing them so they don't get the Strava "glory" that they seek.

Don’t forget Strava gives moving pace, not average pace. So the pace you see is often quicker than they were actually running.

On my run yesterday strava had me around 20 seconds a mile quicker than garmin a average pace did.

Also, how do you know people were racing their workouts like this before strava?

Either way I would unfollow just so I don't have to see it. Obviously the OP is concerned with it so if it's bothering them I would unfollow and then it doesn't.

They are ex-collegiate runners, then brag about how they throw down on strava. One guy said "I don't have time for that slow stuff," when replying to a comment about how his daily run was super fast.

He is supposed to lead the 2:50 pace group at a marathon in a month so that will be entertaining. Dude's never ran more than 8-10 miles since he's been on strava (several months now.)

SOOOOO as suspected. Seeking that Strava glory. That's the only competitive thing they have in their lives is beating their friend on Strava. Just move on.

Strava is awesome and some people are just stupid. I’m on Strava. I have run 14:52/2:25:17 in the last year. I ran 10 miles this morning in like 8:03 pace. Pretty typical (feel free to check - Griffin Bohannon). Don’t hate the game; hate the players.

More people are running and more people are running fast than they were before Strava. The sport is not being wrecked. I don't think Strava is a net positive, but it's certainly not wrecking the sport I think OP is butthurt because he trains at an appropriate pace but runners who he considers beneath him have the fastest times on some segments he runs.

If you ask me its ruining the sport because it requires people to carry phones, smart watches, and Taurus Judge Public Defenders.

I knew a guy who was a 4:50 miler. He would claim he was running sub 5 minute pace average for 13 mile runs with hills. Then his half marathons would be 75-80 minutes and he would say he's always tired. His 10k times would be 40 minutes. It was funny. I know his watch was wrong on his mile pace but this was long before Strava came about.

I can admit, I've blasted a few short segments in my neighborhood just to be #1. I think it's fun.

The people who make excuses for their races are just bad runners. Period. Nothing else to say about it.

Haha - I don’t even know how many followers I have. Not many. Super fair assessment though. My post did sound like it was aiming for that. Don’t check - just take my word for it: I am decently fast on race day and log lots of slow Strava miles.

If you look on Strava at Letsrun leader board, people at the top of the list do their mileage at a sensible pace. Don't know how much mileage the people you follow do, but it's probably not that much.

That's one of the reasons that I got off the platform. I didn't like seeing (seemingly everyone) pushing every run just for the props. It made me start to think that my training was off because I was doing longer, slower runs and only doing tempo/speed work twice a week.

I just realized that I was doing my training to actually train for a race, not with a view towards getting likes or comments. It got old, so I got off the platform (also not on FB/IG/etc.).

I guess it can be motivational for some people, but it was a drag for me.

My marathon pace is ~ 6:25 I think and yet I posted here at year end last year that I'd ran ~ 2,500 miles for the year averaged at just over 6:35 pace I think.

So yeah I'd fit in that wasting my energy category I guess. But then if I run a 2:4x marathon and spend a whole bunch of time increasing my mileage, running hours and hours of joyless long, easy runs, just to run at best maybe 5/10 mins faster then what's the point? That's a lot of wasted time when I could just be enjoying my running.

There’s plenty of people who run that way without having anywhere to post, and would likely run too fast all the time with or without strava. But I’m sure it does effect some people.

You mad bro? My take is that you are probably mad because people are taking your KOMs and beating you on segments during "training runs". Do you get mad when people post instagram photos of delicious food and don't even know how to cook?
