On Wednesday, 2018 World U20 Championships 3000 m gold medalist Nozomi Tanaka went for the Japanese 3000 NR of 8:44.40. She looked to be have it but then faded on the last lap and came up 3.98 seconds short in 8:48.38.
Afterwards she admitted she miscounted the laps.
"It's kind of embarrassing, but I lost count of the laps and thought I was on the last lap when I kicked. I didn't have anything left after that," said Tanaka according to Japan Running News.
